Palmcon, a hearse, and inspiration

Palmcon, a hearse, and inspiration!

Last weekend I attended Palmcon in West Palm Beach, Florida--my home town. What a weekend! To say I had fun would be an understatement. I was exhausted going into the convention because my husband and I worked non-stop for two weeks getting the Sector 13 hearse ready for the convention floor. We fought against rain, humidity, and very large Florida mosquitoes as we worked through the night, day-after-day.  After a massive amount of caffeine we pulled through, and Friday afternoon the hearse glided into the convention center for her debut the next day.

Saturday morning we were ready to go (thank you Vickie for coming out to help with the table)! I'm a geek-girl at heart and this convention made me smile the entire time. But I'll get to that in a minuet... The buzz around the convention according to many and Martin, Mr. Palmcon himself, "why is there a hearse here?" Let me enlighten the curious ones who didn't have a chance to stop by. Sector 13 is a secret division of the FBI, which monitors and controls all paranormal activity with the objective to keep humans safe and the paranormal hidden. The Sector 13 hearse makes an appearance in Covet the Moon, the second book in the Power of the Moon series, a paranormal thriller/romance. The hearse is issued to agent Mia Starr as her undercover department car to help fight against paranormal crime.   As one Palmcon attendee asked... "so you bought a hearse because you put it in your book." No, not at all, but that sounds like something I would do. My husband and I have owned the hearse for about 20 years. The 1969 Cadillac hearse started her career at a local funeral home in Palm Beach County, Florida, and was in service from 1969 until 1992. With a mere 70,000 miles on the odometer, weighing in at over 7,000 pounds and powered by the original 472 cubic inch, four barrel carb engine she drives like a dream. When fully restored, the Sector 13 hearse will be equipped with emergency lights, siren and some additional “classified” Sector 13 hardware. If you're interested in following the restoration and Sector 13 fun, you can follow our pages: Facebook and Twitter

Now on with the show...

We met some really cool people, like these guys from 3-D Me. They tried to laser scan the hearse, which I find completely fascinating, but the hearse is to big at 20 feet. If you haven't heard of 3-D Me, please check them out! Maybe you can get scanned at the next convention they're at and have a an life like 3-D figure made of you.

Day one of the convention was packed with cosplay! I'm a Star Wars fan, and when we go to Star Wars week at Disney, my poor hubby has three children to deal with because once I see Storm Troopers... the adult in me vanishes. So when this happened, I had a permagrin for at least an hour afterward. Thank you to the 501 for the photo op!

As the day went on, those "damn dirty apes" appeared!

Then... More cosplay and a whole lot of fun continued throughout the day!

Day two was a little slower, but zombie Elsa appeared and made it all worth while. There were amazing costumes there and I didn't get nearly enough photos. I plan to do better next time.

I met other paranormal fans and signed a lot of SWAG and books!

But, all good things must come to an end. We loaded the hearse and headed home.

I was impressed with the organization of the convention, everything seemed to run on time and smooth. Martin Pierro, Palmcon's promoter and creator, did an outstanding job! We're looking forward to coming back next year.

That covers Palmcon and the hearse, but where does the "inspiration" part come in to all of this?? I'll tell you with much excitement as I type! I was blown away at the amount of people that came up to ask when the movie was coming out. Blown. Away. Any writer, comic book or otherwise, will tell you it's such a joy to have something they created loved and to have others want more out of it... well, that's icing on the cake. I've been toying around with the idea of scripting the Power of the Moon series and submitting it to studios. I've never been one to sit around and wait for my dreams to come to me, but to go after them with a vengeance because life is short. One of the gentlemen that came by the booth and asked about the movie, and I wish I remembered his name, was a script writer. Imagine that, right? Script writing is an art form all by itself so when he asked about the Power of the Moon movie, I simply replied, "One can dream." He looked at me for a minute with an almost shame on you expression and replayed, "why dream when you can make it happen." Then after a short story about a script he wrote... he was gone. The idea has been burning inside me since and he is absolutely right, why dream when you can make it happen. So my lovely Power of the Moon fans, the script writing has begun! A BIG thank you to the mysterious script writer.

See you all at the next Palmcon!

Much love to my husband, Matt. Who made every second of this possible. xox

Her main objective: keep humans safe and the paranormal hidden.  Fresh out of human training, Mia is looking forward to learning all things paranormal and working with Cole, her deadly and sexy vampire lover. Before she has a chance to settle into her new life, she’s abducted. With her powers unfolding, an ancient enemy is revealed, and a powerful lineage to rival all others.

Cole Barnett will stop at nothing to get Mia back. Pushed to his breaking point when old ties surface, the vampire within him claws at his restraint leaving him with one choice—let it rage! Cole leaves a trail of blood and broken rules he’ll have to answer for in his wake to find Mia. Once he does, he also uncovers a connection between them that could shift the world of the undead. Now the one he covets is the one he needs to let go—her survival depends on it. But his stubborn human has set out to prove him wrong in a battle for love and her own life.

Sometimes you have to unleash the beast…

Short Excerpt:

Excerpt 1:

“Did you love her?” she blurted out the question that had been burning inside her.
“No.” Cole stalked toward the couch. As the music started, he picked up a remote, pressed a button, and the ceiling opened. A large sheet of glass separated them from the moon, stars, and the night’s glow shone down on them inside Cole’s spacious and luxurious log cabin. “I’ve only loved one.”
“Oh.” Her breath caught as his hand reached over the back of the couch toward her.
“Dance with me.”
Cole folded his fingers around Mia’s hand. Arching their arms, he guided her around the couch and pulled her into his embrace. Folding her hand into his chest, he entwined their limbs and placed them between their bodies. His free hand traveled down her back and came to rest in the dip above her waist as he pulled her closer. “I had hopes to share a nice shower after we’d talked but it turned into wet solitude. I need to be close to you, Mia.”
When he placed his thigh between her legs, her breath hitched. Mia’s eyes traveled across his bare skin, up, until she met his gaze with a shy smile. The anxiety from moments ago was fading with each tiny sway of his hips. When the music entered her ears, a petite giggle escaped. She hadn’t expected Etta James, although, At Last was one of her favorite songs.
“Are you laughing at me, Agent Starr?” The corner of his mouth crinkled with his smile.
“A vampire that likes the blues?”
“We are sad creatures, aren’t we?”
“You’re a good man, Detective.” Her tone was serious, and she squeezed him with reassurance.
“Am I?” He leaned closer to her lips, hovering just above them, making her breath quiver from his nearness.
“Yes.”
“I think I have a few more dances with the devil before I can reclaim my soul and be considered a good man.” His hand slid over her cheek, holding her in place with a heated stare. “But…” At this moment, everything was perfect. He seemed just as affected with her nearness as they stood there listening to the song come to a close. “I’d sell my soul all over again just to have your smile against my lips—for you are mine at last.” He sang the last words in a whisper against her mouth.

Excerpt 2:

John’s decision to come to the turnpike station first had Cole’s fangs edging out. “We should go to the scene, to confirm—” He couldn’t finish the thought. Without his blood inside Mia, he couldn’t be sure, and his entire body was conflicted with doubt. His jaw tightened, and the tip of his fangs poked at the inside of his lip. Removing his clip from his belt, he flicked his thumb underneath the first bullet and ejected it from the clip into his palm. He closed his eyes as the silver burned its shape into his flesh and eased the glow he felt creeping into his eyes. Taking a calming breath, he slid the bullet into his pocket and reattached the clip to his belt.
“Stay calm,” John said, as they walked through the doors to the turnpike substation. Cole responded in a low growl that put John on alert, making his jaw muscle tick.
A young man leaning back in his chair with his feet propped on the table looked up from a set of monitors. “Can I help you?”
“Do you get pictures from the road cameras?” John asked.
“Naw, that’s illegal. The whole “Big Brother” argument. We only monitor them. We get an alert from the radar units on the other poles when a vehicle’s speed registers too low or high and then we check the monitors for trouble.” He smacked his gum with an open mouth chew and turned his attention to Cole as he walked behind the counter. “Sir, you can’t come back here,” he said.
“Are these today’s turnpike tickets?” Cole asked, his jaw set in a tight line.
“You can’t just come back here…”
“Answer the question.”
“I-I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” The young man stammered as he reached toward the phone. Cole’s hand covered his, quickly replacing the phone in its cradle.
“We’re going to have a problem if you don’t answer my question,” Cole said, filling in the space between them. He leveled an assertive gaze at the man.
“Barnett. Back off,” John commanded.
“You-you need some type of warrant or authority to come back here.”
Cole ignored the man and grabbed the tin box from the counter. Pulling out a stack of tickets, he held them to his nose. With a frustrated growl, he threw the stack down and grabbed more from the box. With each stack, he grew more agitated. Picking up the fifth stack, he paused as a familiar scent reached his nose. He breathed deeper and tore through the tickets to pull out the one with Mia’s aroma. It was faint, but it was her scent.
“I need the license plate and the photo of the driver this came from.” Cole held out the ticket to man.
“I can’t do that. I need permission and—”
“Now!”
“Sir, you don’t have the authority…”
Cole snatched his badge from his belt and slammed it on the table in front of the man. “How’s this? No?” Arching a brow at the man’s hesitation his gun followed, slamming down with the same force as the badge. “How about this?”
The man locked into Cole’s deadly gaze. When his eyes widened, Cole knew it was from the glow that had started to appear from behind his irises.
“Still not enough authority for you? How about this!” Cole’s fangs jetted out like a switchblade.
“Holy shit! What kind of cops are you?”

They are many more things to come. If you’re in the Palm Beach County area, I’ll be appearing at Palmcon in September. Not only will I be there, but also Mia’s Sector 13 agent car will be displayed on the convention floor. And if there’s one thing cooler than a 1969 Cadillac hearse, it’s one that’s utilized as a tool for fighting crime against paranormal creatures.

Stay tuned for more...

Special thanks to my street team for all their support!

Craving blog tour

Where did you just come from…?

No, not you. I’m talking about the hero in my latest release. Which part of my fertile imagination dreamed up this character?

Dante is the hero in Craving (Talisman #2), and if you haven’t become acquainted yet, let me draw you a picture: Tall, lean, silky dark hair and silver-grey eyes, his body is covered in brightly coloured ink and several piercings, including three steel hoops in one eyebrow. He wears a leather jacket and heavy boots, and rides a fearsome black vintage motorcycle. He swears a little, and smokes too - the quintessential bad boy. However, he’s also a psychic - a medium - who has been seeing and talking to spirits his whole life.

A deal with a demon, a biker psychic and the girl who might just be his salvation... if the demon doesn’t get to her first.

Blurb/Book Description:
Dante isn’t your typical medium. With his leather jacket, tattoos and piercings, he looks more at home on his motorbike than he does holding a séance and Katherine has no intention of getting involved with him. He's the complete opposite of the kind of man she wants and represents everything she's tried to leave behind, but she needs a medium and he’s the best one around.

Dante’s never allowed himself to get close to anyone for fear of putting them in danger. His craving for Katherine is about to bring his worst nightmares to life. ~

Excerpt:

He shrugged out of my grasp, twisting his face away and avoiding my eyes. “I’m trouble, Kitten. If they’re your friends, that’s great. You don’t need me hanging around as well.”
“You’re scared.”
This time his eyes locked onto mine, narrow and flinty. “What did you say?”
I lifted my chin. “Scared.”
A muscle jumped in his cheek. “Yeah? And just what am I supposed to be scared of, Kitten?” He took a step toward me. “You?” The toes of his heavy boots touched mine. I could smell coffee on his breath, hear his uneven breathing.
“I told you, Dante. I’m not afraid of you.” I kept my arms by my sides, my hands loose and relaxed. He took a quick breath and I leapt in. “The idea that someone else has a Talisman. It’s rattled you.”
The flicker of fear in his eyes told me everything. Squashing down my own inadequacies, I moved forward and closed the gap. Before he could demur, I draped my arms around his neck and pressed my lips against his. It was meant to be a peck, a light touch of comfort. I didn’t expect it to ignite.
I could feel everything—the softness of his cool lips, damp with rain; his prickly stubble against my chin; tight arms that wrapped around me; one hand on the small of my back, the other closing around the nape of my neck. He growled deep in his throat and kissed me back, hard. Then his mouth slanted, the kiss went deeper in a scorching blast I felt down to my knees. My hands moved of their own accord, burrowing into his hair, pulling his head further down. He tasted of coffee and something dark and exotic. Dante was delicious.

Author Bio:
Romance author Sofia Grey spends her days managing projects in the corporate world and her nights hanging out with wolf shifters and alpha males. She devours pretty much anything in the fiction line, but she prefers her romances to be hot, and her heroes to have hidden depths. When writing, she enjoys peeling back the layers to expose her characters’ flaws and always makes them work hard for their happy endings.

Music is interwoven so tightly into my writing that I can’t untangle the two. Either I’m listening to a playlist on my iPod, have music seeping from my laptop speakers, or there’s a song playing in my head – sometimes on auto-repeat.

If you follow me, it's no surprise that I'm a fan of Gracen Miller's work.
